Your thoughts are real – they cause biological and physiological effect.
Your body responds to mental input as if it were physically real.
For example, if you experience a heat flush imagine putting your feet into a bucket of ice…imagine the feeling of cold around your toes, imagine how it feels as the cold spreads through your foot and into your lower legs. Make sure you keep your focus on the ice cold water and how cool your feet feel.
Your brain doesn’t know that there isn’t really any ice, but because the message you send tells it there is ice which it knows means you would feel cold, it will set about processes to cool you down.
Or if you need a quick break because everything is weighing you down, but you’re tied to your desk imagine….
You’re here, beside the ocean, swinging gently in this beautiful chair. As you sink into the soft cushion, notice the pattern of the woven grasses on your back. Feel the gentle ocean breezes as they riffle through your hair. As you turn your face to the water catch the smell of salt in the air. Close your eyes and listen as the ocean follows its time-worn path quietly gurgling on the edge of the sand. The sunlight dances on your face as it filters through the leaves over your head, providing cool respite from the scorching midday sun.
Take a few minutes to clear your mind, to allow your muscles to relax as you gently rock, back and forth, back and forth.
Don’t you feel more relaxed now, and better able to face the task at hand?
So be careful of your thoughts! Remember how powerful they can be!
